Dr. Mugyenyi is the Executive Director of the  Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC), a model center that has played a major role in the highly successful Uganda AIDS Control program. Dr. Mugyenyi has been at the forefront of the 20-plus year fight against AIDS in Uganda, and is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in crafting innovative responses to the disease in resource-limited settings. His work has focused on planning, review, and execution of policies and projects on AIDS treatment and research, HIV vaccines trials, access to drugs, poverty alleviation, policy formulation, and health communication. Among his numerous current national and international responsibilities, Dr. Mugyenyi has served as the AIDS Task Force Chairman at the Uganda Ministry of Health, has chaired the Africa Dialogue on AIDS (ADAC), an African-led initiative to coordinate HIV/AIDS related activities in Africa.




Dr. Jorge Flores of the Clinical Development Branch in the Vaccine and Prevention Research Program of NIAID's Division of AIDS. Dr. Flores has made many important contributions to AIDS vaccine research, including bringing plans to initiate the first AIDS vaccine trial in Africa to fruition; formulating and implementing plans to expand AIDS vaccine research in Southern Africa; and contributing to a better understanding of HIV subtypes and vaccine designs.
